Yates Host Debate Tournament

For hundreds of HISD high school students, the New Year began with a debate competition at the annual HUDL Brett L. Elliott Memorial Tournament. The event took place on Friday, January 17th and Saturday, January 18th at Jack Yates High School with nearly 380 debaters from 28 schools in attendance.

This tournament was dedicated to the memory of Brett L. Elliott, one of Houston's most respected communicators, who was taken from his friends and family on March 30, 2009. Brett's friends and family sponsored the tournament in hopes that HUDL students and teachers will come to know a little about such a great man, and about all the positive benefits of participating in debate.

Debaters and coaches packed into the cafeteria for opening ceremonies on Friday afternoon and waited for the debates to start. Once the schedule for the first round was posted, they quickly filled almost every classroom in Yates High School.

Topic: Conflict between parents and teenagers ..

Conflict between parents and teens is normal. This is when your teen will begin embracing developmental skills such as independent thinking, leadership and self-esteem. Keep in mind, however, that kids needs your guidance just as much as ever. Parents often treat teenagers as babies.Parents are the people with authority and help their children to discover picture of the world. Their opinion was only right one for children. But now it all has changed. Children have grown and they want more freedom and independence. They want to have the right to opinions and decisions. But parents continue treating them like little ones.

Tune into the Team Us Talk Show To hear more on this topic @ 10 am on KCOH 1230AM !!!!!
